Homosexuality is rejected in a number of places in the Bible.

Examples:

• Genesis 19: 4-8: “Before they could lean down, the men of the metropolis, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from teen to old male, all the people in one assembly. (5) And they kept calling. to Lot and state to him, "Where are the men who have arrive to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may hold fellowship with them." (6) Finally Lot went out to them to the entrance. but he shut the door behind him. (7) Then he said, "Please, my brethren, do not proceed wickedly. (8) Please, see, I possess two daughters who have never had intercourse with a man. Please deliver them out to you. Then undertake with them what is right in your eyes. Just do nothing to these men, for that is why they have appear under the shadow of my roof. "
• Matthew 10: 14-15: "If you are not received anywhere, or if you do not tune in to your words, then leave that house or municipality and shake the dust off your feet. (15) Verily I say to you, land of Sodom and Gomorrah are more bearable on Judgment Night than for that city. "

  The relationship of homosexuality to Christianity is one of the main topics of discussion in our culture today. In the descent of last year I wrote a review of books by Wesley Hill and Sam Allberry that take the historic Christian view, in Hill’s words: “that homosexuality was not God’s first creative intention for humanity ... and therefore that lesbian practice goes against God’s express will for all human beings, especially those who trust in Christ.”

  You have been part of a research team that is seeking to comprehend how the decision was made to put the word homosexual in the bible. Is that true?

  Ed: Yes. It first showed up in the RSV translation. So before figuring out why they decided to exploit that word in the RSV translation (which is outlined in my upcoming book with Kathy Baldock, Forging a Sacred Weapon: How the Bible Became Anti-Gay) I wanted to see how other cultures and translations treated the same verses when they were translated during the Reformation 500 years ago.   “You shall not recline with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”[1] It is not a surprise that this verse seems to say that lgbtq+ male sex is forbidden in the eyes of God. The dominant view of western Christianity forbids same-sex relations. This verse is one of the clobber passages that people cite from the Bible to condemn homosexuality. This essay first looks at the various ways the verse is translated into the English Bible and then explores some of the strategies used to create an affirming perception of what this alley means for the LGBTQ community. More specifically, it presents the interpretation of K. Renato Lings in which Lev. 18:22 refers to male-on-male incest.

  Introduction

  For the last two decades, Pew Research Center has reported that one of the most enduring ethical issues across Christian traditions is sexual diversity. For many Christians, one of the most frequently first-asked questions on this topic is, “What does the Bible say about attraction to someone of the identical sex?”

  Although its unlikely that the biblical authors had any notion of sexual orientation (for example, the term homosexual wasn't even coined until the tardy 19th century) for many people of faith, the Bible is looked to for timeless guidance on what it means to honor God with our lives; and this most certainly includes our sexuality.

  Before we can vault into how it is that Christians can maintain the authority of the Bible and also affirm sexual diversity, it might be helpful if we started with a concise but clear overview of some of the assumptions informing many Christian approaches to understanding the Bible.

  What is the Bible?

  For Christians to whom the Bible is God’s very written word, it is widely understood that God produced its contents through inspired
