Palm Springs has evolved into a vibrant oasis established for its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and captivating allure. Over the years, the city has cultivated a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, with numerous Diverse events, accommodations, and establishments catering to all society aspects. From lively pool parties and pride festivals to a thriving nightlife scene and a powerful sense of community, Palm Springs has earned its reputation as a beloved and popular gay-friendly getaway. But how did we get here?
A Hollywood Hideaway
Palm Springs’ journey as an LGBTQ+ destination dates assist to the early 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, affluent individuals seeking refuge from the bustling cities flocked to Palm Springs. The studio system exerted tight command over actors' personal lives, including their public image and relationships.
Among the things that might go wrong included activities that the actor did away from the set outside the context of the movie movie. These activities could disturb the public perception of the revenue-generating performer. This created the necessity of a contractual provision established as t
Intro to Gay Tbilisi
In a city where ancient Orthodox churches dot every corner and tradition runs deeper than the Mtkvari River (Kura River), Tbilisi's rainbow-colored undercurrent might surprise you. Georgia's capital is experiencing a queer renaissance that's as complex as its famous wine 🍷.
Welcome to gay Tbilisi, where Soviet-era apartments host secret queenly shows and traditional supra feasts sometimes come with a side of fierce. While it's not exactly the San Francisco of the Caucasus, this city's LGBTQ+ scene is carving out its own distinct identity, one underground party and activist meetup at a time!
My first taste of Tbilisi was in 2016 when I first fell in love with it. In 2024, we stayed in Tbilisi for a month and traveled around Georgia for another month (most notably, Batumi - Georgia's second-largest city on the Black Sea), and one thing that I truly love about Tbilisi (and the country, for that matter) is the rebellious nature of the steady crowds here. From in-your-face graffiti expressing "F#$% Russia" to passionate, politically-motivated younger crowds, I truly desire and believe that once the new generation
Our beloved events listing editor – and my longest employee at Gay Desert Guide – is putting away his laptop and retiring.
Alex McCune and I met when we were neighbors in Cincinnati, Ohio back in the adv 1990s. He was education elementary school at the time, and we both had dogs. So we’d see each other on the street, and then had mutual gay friends in the hood whom we socialized with.
Alex “retired” here, but I pulled him out of retirement to help populate the GayDesertGuide.com website as I started this venture 11 years ago. It took us most of the year to build listings for attractions, businesses, restaurants, hotels and the nightlife of the valley. We launched Labor Day weekend 2013. He’s been running the show ever since. We’ve even traveled together. The company has grown from two of us to over 20.
From attending events and staffing our booth to helping navigate through COVID, Alex has had a great second career in media. Now it’s time for him to enjoy life. So the search begins for the next “Alex”, and I wish him many happy years of not worrying about our calendar of events!

What’s With All the Gay Penguins?
Over and over again, zoos and aquariums around the world are making headlines for their same-sex penguin couplings. One of the most iconic couples was Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins who began acting mating rituals at the Central Park Zoo in 1998. After successfully incubating a rock and then a dummy egg, zookeepers decided to give the loving couple a real, fertilized egg. Roy and Silo hatched a neonate, a female penguin named Tango. Tango then grew up to form a partnership with another female penguin named Tanuzi.
The list of gay penguin couples goes on and on and spans a wide range of species. Harry and Pepper were a pair of Magellenic penguins at the San Francisco Zoo. Sphen and Magic are a pair of male Gentoo penguins at SEA LIFE Aquarium in Sydney who hatched their first chick in 2018. Electra and Viola, also Gentoo penguins, are raising a chick at the L’Oceanogràfic in Valencia, Spain. At Zoo Berlin, two King penguins named Skipper and Ping contain been trying to become fathers, unfortunately with no luck. Ronnie and Reggie are a pair of Humboldt penguins in London. In the Netherlands, a gay African penguin couple rec
