Yep. Excellent. So this is Rebecca Scofield with the Gay Rodeo Oral History Project, and I’m here today with Charles Hancock. And is it OK to register you today?

RS: Marvelous. So today is July 1st, 2021. It's about 2:00 in the afternoon in northern Idaho. What time is it there?

RS: 5:10. Nice evening time interview. And yes. So we'll just receive started. Could you explain me what year you were born in?

RS: And where were you born?

RS: Is that where you grew up?

CH: Yes, I was. We had a novel hospital. I was the first baby born in that hospital

RS: Was that a pretty rural place?

CH: At that time, there were seventeen hundred people. It was the - it was the largest school district as far as square miles in Missouri. It covers a lot of farm ground, a lot of bussing, you recognize, going on.

RS: And can you tell me a little bit about your family background, about your parents or siblings?

CH: There were seven, there are seven children and mom and dad came from they had gone through the Depression as they were growing up. And my father was in World War II, the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy invasion. He had a brother named Emery and he,

    Alabama's Quest for Lgbtq+ Rodeo

    More than 100 people gathered in a large arena in Fort Worth, TX to survey and compete in what was called a "traditional" rodeo. However, the legal title traditional may depend on your point of view. The event is a gay rodeo. It's prefer a traditional rodeo with bull riding and calf roping, but it's unseal to the LGBT people. John Beck of Denver is an expert on the gay rodeo. He's hard to miss with his large, red feather on his cowboy hat.

    "That's been my signature for close to ten years," he says.

    Beck is known as the Grandfather of the Homosexual Rodeo and is one of the oldest competitors on the circuit. He rode in straight rodeos too, but says the atmosphere of a queer rodeo is more welcoming.

    "We work together beat than in straight rodeos," says Beck. "Straight rodeos, I hate to tell, is more of a cut throat type business. We're out here for camaraderie and fun and give the people who win a pat on the back. You don't find that in other rodeos."

    Even though male lover rodeos aren't as competitive as their traditional counterparts, Beck says they're just as dangerous.
