As we scan on the website Acción Gay::

The origin of this celebration dates advocate to June 28, 1969,when the so-called Stonewall Riots (New York)took place, marking the launch of the effort for gay rights.

In the preceding morning of June 28, 1969, the New York police led a raid on the Stonewall Pub, located in Greenwich Village. The gay community responded with a series of demonstrations that led to vicious incidents. In the history of the homosexual movement in the United States, this episode marks the moment when gays began to fight against an entire system, legal, police and social, that persecuted them.
