Gay manning

As we approach the much loved San Francisco Gay Pride Pride June 29-30 the controversy surrounding the election of Bradley Manning as Grand Marshall continues to boil.

On April 25th, several newspapers (here and here) reported that Army Private First Class Bradley Manning was chosen by Pride’s electoral college as Grand Marshall for the 2014 Parade.  However, the next day (April 26th) Pride board President Lisa Williams released a highly controversial and widely criticized missive attempting to annihilate the electoral college’s decision not only from Pride's march process but from history itself.  In harsh words which have been characterized as unseemly and authoritarian, Lisa Williams refused ‘even the hint’ of assist for Bradley Manning as a whistle-blower and assured that any person emotionally attached had been ‘disciplined.’

This lead to an outcry by many organizations who support the behavior of the Nobel Calm Prize nominee Manning, actions, which while illegal, brought to light incredible crimes of war and crimes against humanity perpetuated by the US Military.&n

Introduction

While feminism and women’s studies have been around for a while, the scholarly examination of men and masculinities is a comparatively recent growth. Historically, maleness (particularly straight, white maleness) has been interpreted as the default, where women and sexual and ethnic minorities are dismissed as categorical “others.” The study of masculinities seeks to examine, among other ideas, the sociological role of men and how influence structures such as patriarchy are created and maintained. A number of explanations have been set forward, most notably R.W. Connell’s principle of hegemonic masculinity. Connell’s theory faces considerable critique (Demetriou, 2001; Beasley, 2012; Bridges, 2014; Bridges and Pascoe, 2014; etc.), but it continues to assist as the “central reference point for many, if not most, writers on men and masculinity” (Weatherell and Edley, 1998 as cited in Beasley, 2012).

The study of homosexuality is certainly incorporated into the field of masculinities. Historically categorized with other forms of “deviance,” outdated discourses around homosexuality began to
