Gay partialism

The interesting phenomenon of sexual deviations and perversions

Summary

Sexual behaviour is broadly divided into sexual functions and sexual practices. A normal sexual practice is difficult to define and is also affected by the current social norms. Paraphilias or sexual deviations (formerly called perversions) form a unique category with the typical feature of sexual arousal in response to an inappropriate sexual stimulus, and may interfere with the capacity to establish sexual relationships. Such behaviours may be harmless or injurious, physically or psychologically, and can become sexual offences in the absence of consent. The true prevalence rate is unknown, and milder forms are not detected. Treatment is not easily achieved, and recidivism is high. Psychological and medical therapies have been tried, and a comprehensive approach including legal considerations, appears most promising.

Intro

According to Martin Kafka in a 2010 issue of the Archives of Sexual Behavior, partialism refers to “a sexual interest with an exclusive focus of a specific part of the body” and occurs in both heterosexual and homosexual individuals. Kafka also noted in the same document that partialism is categorized as a sexual paraphilia "not otherwise specified" in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and then goes on to say that “individuals with partialism sometimes describe the anatomy of interest to them as having equal or greater erotic attraction for them as do the genitals.” Scientific research indicates that the most prevalent form of partialism is podophilia (i.e., sexual arousal from feet).

Historically, partialism was viewed as synonymous with sexual fetishism. However, Kafka noted that there is a “diagnostic separation of partialism (intense, persistent, and ‘exclusive’ sexual arousal to a non-genital body part) from fetishism (intense and persistent sexual arousal to non-living objects, including some body products)." Although I accept this very subtle difference, I essentially view partialism and fetishism as one

List of Paraphilias

A paraphilia is a sexual problems where the sexual arousal is in response to objects or stimuli not connected with normal sexual conduct patterns and that may interfere with the establishment of normal sexual relationships.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual List of Paraphilias

The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the prevailing resource for diagnostic criteria of paraphilias, describes the essential highlight of paraphilias as recurrent, intense, sexual urges and sexually arousing fantasies generally involving nonhuman objects, the suffering or humiliation of oneself or partner, or children or other non consenting persons. The DSM-IV-TR describes the more commonly observed paraphilias and makes reference to several other examples. People who exposure one paraphilia may also experience other paraphilias. Commonly, people who manifest paraphilias also exhibit personality disorders, drug abuse, alcohol violence, and other substance violence problems, or affective disorders.

The DSM-IV-TR lists the tracking paraphilias:
