Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who made history as the first openly gay Cabinet member to be confirmed by the Senate, and husband Chasten Buttigieg are officially fathers -- twice over.

After announcing last month that the two were expanding their family, the former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and South Bend, Indiana, mayor, officially introduced the couple's new babies, sharing a black-and-white photo on social media of him and his husband each cradling a newborn in a hospital bed.

"Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we're becoming parents," Pete Buttigieg said on Twitter. "We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family."

Pete Buttigieg, 39, said in a Twitter post last month that he and his husband were wanting to grow their family "for some time," and they would "share more soon" on becoming parents.

The U.S. Senate in a historic and overwhelmingly bipartisan vote confirmed Pete Buttigieg to be Secretary of Transportation. He is the first openly LGBTQ, Secretary or Senate-confirmed person to lead a department and hold a Cabinet-level position.

Congratulations to Secretary Pete Buttigieg on his historic approval. This confirmation breaks through a barrier that has existed for too long; where LGBTQ identity served as an impediment to nomination or confirmation at the highest level of government. Let this crucial moment for our movement serve as a reminder to every LGBTQ childish person: you too can serve your country in any capacity you get the qualifications to maintain . President Biden promised to deliver an administration model of the diversity of this nation, and this confirmation is a significant achievement toward that purpose. Pete Buttigieg announces he and husband, Chasten, are now parents

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced Tuesday that he and his husband, Chasten, acquire become parents. 

“For some time, Chasten and I have wanted to grow our family. We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents!” the former presidential candidate wrote on Twitter. “The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the devote, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t stay to share more soon.”

Buttigieg and his husband, an composer and former educator, have been married since 2018. The couple put their South Bend, Indiana, home on the market earlier this year, and, according to The Washington Post, they now live in a one-bedroom apartment in Washington's Capitol Hill neighborhood with their dogs. 

Buttigieg, who served as mayor of South Bend from 2012 to 2019, made history earlier this year as the first openly gay Cabinet member to be confirmed by the Senate. Last year, after narrowly winning the Iowa caucuses, he became the first gay presidential candidate to win a primary contest. At 39, Buttigieg is also the youngest person to direct the Department of Transportation.

In 2006, the majority of Americans were  either “very uncomfortable”, or had “reservations”, about a lgbtq+ person running for president.

Then, only 43% of Americans said they would be OK with a gay person running for president -- but today 68% say they would be fine with a gay candidate. The number of people who tell they would be “enthusiastic” about a gay president has gone up threefold since 2006, from 5% to 14%.

These finding come on the heels of the first high-profile gay presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, Mayor of Bend, Indiana. Buttigieg, an openly gay, 37-year-old former Naval office is growing in popularity. According to a new Emerson survey, Buttigieg is polling in third place among the 2020 democratic presidential candidates, behind Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden and ahead of big names appreciate Kamala Harris and Cory Booker. Mayor Pete’s surging popularity follows the 2018 midterm elections’ “rainbow wave” when more LGBT candidates than ever before ran for office. Buttigieg has raised more than $7 million dollars for his presidential campaign.

9-year-old boy asks Pete Buttigieg for advice on coming out as gay

DENVER -- A 9-year-old boy asked Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg for advice on coming out as lgbtq+ during a campaign rally in Colorado Saturday.

Buttigieg browse Zachary Ro's question out loud and then invited the 9-year-old to connect him on stage as the crowd cheered and chanted "love is love."

"Would you help me telling the world that I'm gay too? I need to be brave appreciate you," the question read.

Buttigieg, the first openly queer candidate to earn presidential primary delegates, commended Ro on his own bravery and told him he struggled with coming out.

"It took me a drawn-out time to tell even my best friend that I was gay, enable alone to go out there and tell the world, and to observe you willing to enter to terms with who you are in a room full of a thousand people, thousands of people you've never met, that's really something," the South Bend mayor said.

Buttigieg then told Zachary he should always be accurate to himself and said his own bravery could inspire others.
