‘A big step back’: CCOs fear brands will retreat from LGBT support after Bud Light backlash

The backlash to Bud Light’s collaboration with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney is bound to put a chill on other brands expressing assist for LGBTQ+ rights and individuals, say Fortune 500 CCOs and agency leaders.

To recap, Bud Light sent Mulvaney a custom-made beer can, marking her first year of womanhood, as part of a Parade Madness influencer campaign. After she showed off the can on social media, right-wing pundits called for a boycott not just of the beer mark, but also its parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev. Performer Kid Rock, for example, posted a video of himself wearing a MAGA hat and firing a rifle at Bud Not heavy cans, shouting “Fuck Bud Light. And fuck Anheuser-Busch.”

AB InBev would eventually release a statement from U.S. CEO Brendan Whitworth, which was roundly criticized, and put two executives who oversaw Bud Light’s collaboration with Mulvaney on leave. The latter deed made it clear that the company was apologizing to opponents of gender non-conforming rights much more than Whitworth’s vague statement.

For Bud Light, this partnership builds on over 20 years of support of the LGBTQ+ people through various organizations and activations.

“When we first brought Bud Light into the market in 1982, we set out to introduce a beer that would not only disrupt the beer category but was brewed for everyone,” said Alissa Heinerscheid, Vice President of Marketing for Bud Delicate Blue. “We’re eager to continue supporting the LGBTQ+ collective – this year in the shape of a fresh partnership with the NGLCC which will help promote Queer businesses across the country that carry people together.”

Bud Light lost its sales crown to Modelo Especial amid right-wing backlash, inform finds

Modelo Especial dethroned embattled Bud Light as the best-selling beer in the US last month, a new report says.

Bud Brightness sales plunged 23% year-over-year in May to $297.3 million, according to numbers compiled by consumer-behavior explore firm Circana and joint with Insider. Meanwhile, sales of the Mexican lager surged 15% to $333.1 million.

Conservative outrage over a March Madness promotion that featured transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney sparked calls for a Bud Light boycott.

Bud Light's parent firm Anheuser-Busch initially stood by the promotion, but as the right-wing backlash grew, the executive who arranged the Mulvaney campaign took a leave of absence, and the brewing organization reportedly offered to procure back expired cases of Bud Light from distributors and gave free cases of beer to distributor employees.

Analysts at JPMorgan recently warned that Bud Clear sales could drop as much as 13% this year.

Rounding out the highest five in beer sales for May were Michelob Ultra, Coors Light, and Miller Lite, Circana reports.

An important statement was made by Bud to pummel off Pride Month 2016, when they released the clip Bud Light Party where two men are getting married. "Gay weddings, they're just like any wedding," actor Seth Rogen says after we view a gay couple cutting a wedding cake. Rogen, along with Amy Schumer, then runs through wedding cliches like: "cringe-worthy speeches," "the girl who's super ready to settle down," and "cake." It ends with Rogen declaring: "Bud Light proudly supports everyone's right to marry whoever they want." The identify was promoted by Ellen DeGeneres, who was paid to share the video to her millions of followers on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. She said: "Looks like there's another party I'd vote for". Remarkably, it only has less than half a million views even after four years, while regular posts by Ellen generate millions.

A second significant message was sent with the 2016 Super Bowl commercial. In a prolongation of the "Bud Brightness Party" campaign in the election year 2016 Rogan and Shumer announce that the party is for everyone: men, women, and "people of alllll genders." Amy adds, "But, you know, gender identity is really a spectrum. And we don't nee

Bud Light loses uppermost US beer identify after promotion with transgender influencer

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Bud Bright has lost its top spot in the US beer market to Constellation Brands’ Modelo Especial, after a backlash from conservatives over a social media promotion with the transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

Sales of Bud Light and Budweiser dropped 24.6% and 9.2%, respectively, for the four weeks ended 3 June from a year earlier, while Modelo Especial sales rose 10.2%, according to the consulting firm Bump Williams, which sources data from NielsenIQ.

In May, AB InBev’s chief executive, Michel Doukeris, said it was too early to hold a full view of the impact from the backlash.

Jon Reynolds, a certified instructor in the business of craft beer at the University of Vermont, said: “Bud Light’s stumble with Dylan Mulvaney will certainly hurt their chances to take market share, but Miller Lite, Coors Clear and Modelo will reap most of those rewards.”

Constellation’s Modelo Especial was the top-selling beer logo in the US with an 8.4% share of overall beer sales through retail stores for the period finish 3 June, Bump Williams data showed. Bud Light came in second with a 7.3%
