The evolution of LGBTQ+ Disney characters has always been agonizingly lethargic and unsteady. The organization has taken baby steps over the years to start including queer visibility in its films and TV shows, usually by allowing Pixar to retain the two moms veiled in the back or okaying the idea of LeFou being gay after all.

Conservative groups own urged a boycott of Disney over news that the family-friendly studio would feature its first "exclusively gay moment" in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Director Bill Condon told the British gay magazine Attitude that Le Fou, the bumbling sidekick played by Josh Gad, would be portrayed as a homosexual man. "LeFou is somebody who on one afternoon wants to be Gaston and on another diurnal wants to kiss Gaston," Condon said. "He's bewildered about what he wants."
Following that announcement, evangelical preacher Franklin Graham warned that Disney is trying to "push the LGBT agenda into the hearts and minds of… children." A conservative mommy blogger cancelled her trip to Walt Disney World over the controversy, while an Alabama drive-in has declined to screen the movie. Russia further announced that Beauty and the Beast will be rated 16+ over concerns that the adaptation would violate the country's "gay propaganda" laws.

New Disney-Pixar film Onward includes a reference to a sapphic couple - which led to it being banned in Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
There have also been brief references to gay characters in other big Disney-owned franchises.
Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo played the minor role of "grieving man" in the 2019 blockbuster.
And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker features (spoiler) the first queer kiss in the franchise's history - described by a reviewer, external as "a brief flash of two women kissing... among a crowd of characters".
In January, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said there will be an openly transgender character "in a movie that we're shooting right now."
And Phastos, the character played by Bryan Lee Henry in The Eternals, was announced to be openly lgbtq+ - with a husband and kids.
