Vancouver’s Andrea Bang hopes Kim’s Convenience helps boost Asian Canadian representation
Craig Takeuchi / The Georgia Straight
When it comes to breaking new earth in the North American entertainment industry, a number of household names of Korean descent approach to mind: comedian Margaret Cho, Canadian actor Sandra Oh of Grey’s Anatomy fame, U.S. player John Cho of Star Trek andHarold & Kumar Proceed to White Castle.
Vancouver’s Andrea Bang might soon be added to the list.
Chatting with Bang at a West Broadway coffee shop, she’s softer and sweeter in person than her on-screen nature Janet in the CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience.
The TV series, which was rescheduled (thanks to a Toronto Blue Jays game) to launch on October 11, is a home-screen adaptation of the 2011 stageplay of the same identify by Ins Choi, which struck a chord with audiences.
The Burnaby-raised Bang plays Janet, the Canadian-raised daughter of immigrant Korean parents who run the titular store. Mr. Kim, or Appa (played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), is the stern and often bumbling patriarch while Mrs. Kim, or Umma (played by Jean Yoon), is the well-meaning but sometimes ove
Every now and then a show comes along that changes how you reflect of television. For me, Kim’s Convenience is one of those shows. Therefore, I was let down by the news that its current fifth season — debuting June 2nd on Netflix — would be its last. One of the few shows to center an Asian family, Kims Convenience broke barriers and was a huge step forward in the visibility and diversity on North American television.
The show focuses on an immigrant couple and their (in this case) Canadian-born children. Starring Paul Sun-Hynung Lee as the proudly paternal Mr Kim – known as Appa (the Korean synonyms for dad) to his children – and Jean Yoon as the stubborn Mrs Kim – known as Umma (you guessed it, Korean for mom), the Kims are joined by their kids, photography scholar Janet (Andrea Bang) and reformed unpleasant boy Jung (the effortlessly suave Simu Liu). And while the general premise of Asian immigrant parents and their North American-born children invites obvious comparison to Fresh Off the Boat, from the very first scene, I knew Kim’s Convenience was something different than I had ever seen before.
