Disney’s First Gay Character: What Is Representation?

We all grasp Disney has become increasingly progressive in the past few years with its inclusion of more diverse casts, feminist movies, and empowering messages in its films.  Following Frozen, a movie which focused on platonic love saving lives over romantic relationships, and Moana, the first film with a Polynesian princess and a non-white cast with no male adore interest whatsoever, Disney’s latest reformist step has sparked revolt across every variant of opinion: in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, Disney has unveiled its first openly gay character.

Unsurprisingly, this has led to raucous controversy — from my mother complaining about it over dinner to the movie being banned in an Alabama drive-in theatre and in countries appreciate Kuwait and Russia, where gay rights are next to nonexistent. However, the strongest resistance to this news came from the LGBT community itself.

This is because at first glance, Lefou is as stereotypical a gay character as they come.  Lefou is the villain’s fumbling sidekick and bares the brunt of most of the movie’s jokes.  He is short and stout and flamboyant and fo

Considering the quality, quantity, and diversity of films distributed under the Walt Disney Company and its labels, GLAAD has given The Walt Disney Company a GOOD grade

Walt Disney Studios included LGBTQ characters in all five of its Disney theatrical releases. While the LGBTQ representation in some films was groundbreaking in kids and family spaces, such as Lightyear and Strange World, other films’ inclusion was more minor, such as Surgeon Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and other Marvel properties. Inclusion in Disney’s other theatrical labels, Searchlight and 20th Century, was minimal.

As for streaming, Hulu delivered outstanding LGBTQ-centric stories with romantic comedies Fire Island and Crush,in addition to casual inclusion in several other films including Darby and the Dead and Fresh. Disney+ released LGBTQ stories that reached a wide kids and family audience such as Zombies 3 and Better Nate Than Ever, but missed the highlight in films like Hocus Pocus 2 and Turning Red, which only included “blink and you’ll overlook it” moments of voice, if any at all. A concerning trend we’ve seen in the past year is the remov

Disney just cant express gay

In Pride 2022, the Florida Senate passed the ‘Parental Rights in Education’ bill for the state, or as activists acquire called it, the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill.

The law bears major similarities with Margaret Thatcher’s infamous Section 28 in the UK (introduced in 1988) and forbids schools from discussing sexual orientation and gender self. Whilst Section 28 was thankfully repealed in 2003, this new legislation is a cause of concern for LGBTQIA+ communities due to the impact it would have on queer youth.

President Joe Biden condemned the law, and Pale House Press Secretary Jen Psaki described it as a blunt target on vulnerable children. However, The Walt Disney Corporation, which is very prominent in Florida, refused to condemn the law. Tracking the ‘Don’t State Gay’ announcement, CEO Bob Chapek sent an email to employees acknowledging the ‘inspiring’ content that Disney had produced, and promising to continue creating diverse content. Yet, it subsequently came to light that Disney had partially funded Republican articulate lawmakers through political donations to the party, including GOP Governor Ron DeSantis who had proposed t

When fans consider of Disney movies and the Disney television channel, they may think of a tale as old as period in which a princess marries a prince, and then they live happily ever after. The LGBTQ+ collective has become more represented in media in recent years and Disney is just one of many companies hopping aboard that educate as well. Unfortunately, not every aspect of the Diverse community has been represented due to a lack of characters within the Disney canon, and some representation has fallen flat.
