Being the “Gay Uncle” Means…

Family is complicated. There are no small parts, only small players. Although it didn’t experience like it at the time, entity the black sheep put you ahead of the game. You were gifted with a clarity you knew would be useful someday, but how? For what? To whom? You know you’re a true lgbtq+ uncle if:

1. You fled your red state hometown for an elite coastal city.

Maybe your mom didn’t exactly combine PFLAG when you came out. Perhaps your success began in exile. I for instance fled my ignorant family to a town fortified by its gayness, placing fifteen hundred miles of continent between myself and them. Since then I’ve been slowly rebuilding a relationship with my father the way a volcano rebuilds its obliterated edifice. I finally faced facts and stopped trying to store my sister. My grandparents, mother, and brother are all in my past, their last remaining task being death in that regard. The simple ask “Are your folks cool?” holds a lot of weight.

New York. Los Angeles. Miami. San Francisco. You run until you run out of land, because only the ocean has any right to be endless. Your city is a surrogate for the cradle that upt

He much prefers the uncle title. The Black Monday actor sat down with People magazine to discuss his about to be released memoir, Uncle of the Year. The Tony Award nominee explained why the guncle moniker isn’t for him,

“I’m not a tangential ethics in my nieces’ and nephews’ lives. I’m their uncle. And it’s a little cutesy. I’m a 44-year-old man.”

Gay Uncle

Like a regular uncle... Only more fabulous

"Guncle" is the term used to detail a Gay Uncle.  It is the obvious, but clever, combination of the words "gay" and "uncle."  Typically used as a term of endearment, it refers to the same-sex attracted brother or brother-in-law of a straight couple who have kids who like spending time with their uncle.

"Guncle" is similar to the term "Funcle," the Fun Uncle.  It reminds us of the happy-go-lucky, carefree bachelor uncle who loves his nieces and nephews and always shows them a excellent time.  However, guncles are oftentimes in romantic or married relationships, so a child might have two guncles.  Whether partnered or not, guncles bring gifts to the nieces and nephews, plays games with them, s

I think that the common theme across them all was that I would never hold dreamt about ever asking them for advice on sexuality matters. This wasn’t only a generational discomfort but also a social discomfort. Remember folks we’re talking about mid-1980s rural Ireland, so think 1950s Brighton.

So, here I am today with six nieces and nephews of my own and four nieces and nephews through marriage, which includes the spouse’s. We also h
